Field Methods (Ling 240a,b): The field methods course is a full year course required of all graduate students, taken in either the second or the third year. (Some students elect to take the course more than once.) In the course of engaging in a detailed study of the phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics of a particular language, the course emphasizes phonetic ear-training and extensive one-on-one work with native speakers throughout the year. In addition to being engaged in a detailed description of a language, the field methods course plays an important role in the training of linguists as scientific thinkers.
