Supporting Berkeley Linguistics

As the University of California comes to rely more and more on the generosity of its alumni/ae and other friends for the support of important teaching and research programs, we have identified two major funding priorities in honor of the two founders and early guides of our department.

We invite you to make a gift online. Type "Emeneau Memorial Fund" or "Haas Fellowship" in the Special Instructions field of the secure gift form, or leave it blank to make an unrestricted gift.

Murray B. Emeneau Memorial Fund

The UC Berkeley Department of Linguistics announces the formation of a Murray B. Emeneau Memorial Fund to support in situ fieldwork by Linguistics graduate students on indigenous and minority languages spoken anywhere in the world. Such research is immensely urgent, not only in the western hemisphere but in Asia, Africa, and Oceania; it is the kind of work that Prof. Emeneau encouraged throughout his life, and it is an area where Berkeley students and faculty have long been leaders. We would like to have our own sources of funding for students who need support in their field research, and if we can raise even twenty or thirty thousand dollars we would be able to guarantee at least some funding annually.

Mary R. Haas Fellowship

In her will, Professor Mary Haas generously left money for the support of graduate students. We hope to be able to augment these funds to create a full two-year fellowship, in her honor, for entering graduate students. To be able to give a two-year fellowship every year we will need a million dollars or so; in pursuit of this long-term goal every donation helps! Graduate fellowship funding is one of the most important factors in making sure the best students can come to Berkeley, and unfortunately it is harder and harder for students to pay for a graduate education without fellowship support.
