Directions:

The two main airports for San Francisco and the East Bay are San Francisco International (SFO) and Oakland International (OAK). While SFO is the largest of the two, you may find that Oakland is more convenient if you are staying in Berkeley. There are many transportation options from either of the airports to Berkeley.

Transportation from San Francisco Airport (SFO):

1. TAXI

Fare to Berkeley: approximately $60.
Fare to San Francisco: $25 - $38.

2. SHUTTLE SERVICES

Note: Within the past couple of years there have been reports of airport shuttle scams. The shuttles listed have good reputations. Check the names carefully; one of the scams involves copycat names. If you choose to use a different shuttle service, be sure to agree upon a price before accepting to use the service, and be aware that the driver may wait (sometimes up to an hour!) for the shuttle to fill up with passengers before leaving.

Super Shuttle from SFO to downtown San Francisco hotels. For reservations (24-hour advance notice recommended), call (415) 558-8500. Fare: $15.00

SFO Airporter from SFO to downtown San Francisco hotels. Runs every 20 minutes, 6:20 am to 11:20 pm. No reservation required. Pickups at the lower level near the blue posts. Fare: $12.00

3. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Buses from SFO: SamTrans Buses stop on the upper level at airport. You can take the buses to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) or to San Francisco.

KX (express) to Transbay Terminal at 1st and Mission (about 2 blocks from Embarcadero BART station in San Francisco at Market and Beale). The ride takes about 30 minutes and runs every 30 minutes from 6:00 a.m. until about midnight. Fare: $3.00. No large luggage allowed.

BX (express) to Colma BART Station. Buses run every 15-30 minutes (the departure frequency varies depending on the day of the week) from 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The trip to Colma BART station takes about 20 minutes, and the fare is $1.10 one-way. Luggage rack provided.

BART to Berkeley: Take a Richmond-bound train to the Berkeley Station. (Evenings and Sundays, the Richmond-bound train does not run from San Francisco. Instead take a Concord-bound train and transfer to Richmond train at 12th Street Station in Oakland.)

BART runs from 6 am to 12 midnight. UC Berkeley Campus is 1 block east of the Downtown Berkeley BART station. Fare: $3.05 from Coma, $2.65 from Embarcadero.

From Oakland Airport (OAK):

3. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Take the Air-BART shuttle to the Coliseum BART station. The bus runs every 15 minutes from 6:00 am to midnight. Fare: $2.00.

BART to Berkeley: Take a Richmond-bound train to the Berkeley Station. Runs from 6 am to 12 midnight. UC Berkeley Campus is 1 block east of BART station. Fare: $1.65.

By Car:

From I-80 exit at University Avenue. Continue along University Avenue for about 2.5 miles, and turn right on Shattuck Avenue. Take Shattuck to Durant Avenue, which is a one-way street headed east, and make a left. Follow Durant to Piedmont, and turn left. The next left is Bancroft, which is one-way headed west. There are several commercial parking garages in the area: on Bowditch south of Bancroft; on Bancroft between Telegraph and Dana (next to the Student Union); and on Durant between Dana and Telegraph.

There is also a University parking lot on Bancroft (under the tennis court), which can be used on evenings and weekends for a flat rate. [University Parking]
